From the Frontline: Why I believe in the PCI Academy

In 2018, I was working as a Clinical Officer in Imvepi Zone 3 Health Post — a remote corner of a Ugandan refugee settlement. The needs were overwhelming. But one thing was clear to anyone walking through those gates: when it came to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), our systems had been left behind.

That same year, Primary Care International (PCI) ran an in-person training through the UNHCR multi-country project. It was a turning point in my career. Training under experts like Mamsallah Faal-Omisore and David Mazza was not just informative — it was transformational.

I became PCI’s first-ever graduate of the Caring for Refugees with NCDs course, and I later joined PCI as a Clinical Associate. Together, we began integrating NCD services into our primary care response — a first for our refugee health setting.
But then COVID-19 hit. Travel restrictions halted all in-person training. Like many others, we suddenly saw how dangerously exposed humanitarian settings were — NCD comorbidities lit the fuse for catastrophic mortality rates.

Out of that crisis, The PCI Academy was born.
This blended learning platform equips health workers with the clinical skills, tools and confidence to respond where it matters most.
As a PCI Academy facilitator, I’ve worked with learners across dozens of countries: health advisors, senior public health officers, primary care clinicians and frontline responders. These are people who join workshops, submit clinical logbooks, write action plans — and cascade their learning to colleagues in real time.

One of my proudest moments was the recent Voices from the Field seminar. Experts from WHO, LSHTM, IRC and MSF shared the stage with on-the-ground innovators like Shatha Albeik, Vukoni Edward, and Bashir Jama. From no-cost diabetes care in Hargeisa to NCD kits in Gaza and clinics in Bidibidi, these were real examples of impact from PCI Academy alumni.

Today, PCI’s NCD courses remain a lifeline. In fact, they’re more accessible than ever.

A New, Simpler Way to Access The PCI Academy
We’ve just launched a new subscription model for The PCI Academy — the biggest shift in how we work since the platform began.

Previously, our offer was bespoke — course access negotiated with each partner. We’ve simplified all of that.

Now, with one subscription, organisations can access all of our structured courses — with flexible options based on team size and the level of support needed.

Courses include:
  • NCD Essentials, Extension, Clinical Skills, Operations, and Training of Trainers
  • Mental Health in Primary Care
  • Paediatrics
  • Sexual & Reproductive Health
  • Pain Management
  • Leadership & Supervision
  • Digital Literacy
  • Clinical Skills in Primary Care

(Some content is also available in French. Additional languages available on request.)

Depending on the tier selected, subscriptions can include:
  • Live workshops and orientation sessions
  • Graded assignments and certificates
  • Dedicated PCI Academy facilitators
  • Enhanced reporting and onboarding support
  • Optional add-ons for content localisation or new course creation

Everything is hosted on a secure, mobile-friendly platform — no software installation needed.

Why This Matters
The PCI Academy is already used by UNHCR, WHO, Ministries of Health and NGO partners in over 50 countries.

In low-resource, humanitarian, and conflict-affected settings, strong primary care isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. But without adequate support, frontline clinicians are too often left isolated and under-equipped.

The PCI Academy changes that.
It’s one of the few scalable, context-sensitive learning platforms that delivers structured, practical and clinically sound training to health workers on the ground.

And at a time of shrinking budgets and urgent health needs, this is proven value for money — and a real investment in people, in systems, and in futures.
